Location:
Sunset Farm is located 30 minutes southwest of Ottawa, in a village known as Prospect.
Sunset Farm History and Goals:
The farm has been in our family for almost 100 years...in the early 1900's my grandparents, Adam and Annie Bella Jones bought this farm and did "mixed farming", with a little bit of everything! Rob and I are very proud to own this farm now, and hope that one day one of our children, Robyn 13 and Joshua 11, will carry on the tradition.
We own 120 acres which consists of pasture, hayfields, a quarry and bush. We also take hay off of my father's property which is 200 acres adjacent to us. The farm buildings are all cedar log, and were built in the 1800's - the original stone house burned down and was replaced around 1900 by a red Victorian farmhouse.
We bought our first registered Highlands in 1992 - two bred cows. After that, we were "hooked" on Highlands. Our 'just a couple' has turned into a goal of twenty breeding cows and we are quickly approaching that number. Most of our cows are in the 1100-1400 lb range.
Structural soundness is extremely important in our breeding program. We don't want to see Highlands "change" as some of the other breeds have - we like our cattle to be true "Scottish Type" with short, broad heads, deep long bodies, moderate leg length, and lots of hair coat. Our herd sire, Gusgurlach of Windrush #6015 (affectionately known as "Gus"), is a son of an imported Scottish bull, Iain Mor of Glenquoich #4567. A lot of our cows are also daughters or granddaughters of imported cows or bulls, and we like the "resulting" offspring.

Since 2002 the mature daughters from Gus have been artificially inseminated with bulls from Scotland including:
Jock of Glengorm M7,198GB,  Moluag of Tinto M7,573GB,  Jock 26th of Leys M7,171GB & Bart of Benmore M7,177GB

Whether our cattle are destined for breeding stock, or for meat, we believe in using only the best bulls on quality cows. We "steer" most of the bull calves at six months of age, keeping only the very best intact...Our steers are ready for slaughter between eighteen months and two years of age, and we "finish" them for sixty days before slaughter. We sell most of our Highland beef by the "quarter" or "half", but also sell Hamburg and smoked sausage. The show ring is an important part of our promotion and marketing program, and we also spend a great deal of time promoting the breed at other agricultural events (farm shows and local fairs).
